Hello everyone. Please introduce yourself and post a short position on this quote from the introduction to your text book.
In contrast to the instant obsolescence of popular culture, the study of Western culture offers an alternative that has passed the unforgiving test of time. Long after today's heroes and celebrities have fallen into oblivion, the achievements of our artistic and literary ancestors - those who have forged the Western tradition will remain.
I will go first:
My name is Michelle Barron. I have lived in Tampa nearly all my life. I received a BA in English Literature in 1982 and an MFA (painting) in 2007, both from USF. In addition to teaching at HCC, I work as the art instructor and coordinator for Project Return (www.projectreturn.org.) You can see some of my paintings at the archives of the University of South Florida's Contemporary Art Museum: http://www.usfcam.usf.edu/Media/MFA2007Show/
My position to the above quote from our text book is that it makes too easy a division between popular culture and "high" art. This division has been largely discredited in the post-modern era. Some might argue that there are popular roots to all our "high" art. One that comes to mind is the ballad form. Not only has it stood the test of time but has served at the basis for complex jazz forms. Jazz was considered barbaric only a little over 50 years ago, but it is regarded as high culture now. The whole question of popular vs. high culture is very complicated. Another thing that comes to mind is the comic book. The comic book will never be "obsolescent."
My name is Anthony Spatola and I grew up in New Jersey, but now live in Brandon. I have chosen the career path of Veterinary Technician and am persuing my degree in the Veterinary field. I am very open minded and have very diverse qualities which comes from diverse life experiences. I am excited for this class, and hope to expand my intelect even more.
ReplyDeleteIn reference to the quote above, my opinion of any dipiction of culture in general would have to be decided by the geography in which the population exists. There are many different sets of standards in every society. For a piece of art to survive for thousands of years perhaps could mean that it is "high" art or society influenced the general population to develope such standards out of fear of ridicule or isolation. Therefore, I also feel that society ifluences culture by deciding of what the social norm should be. In the end, the difference between what is "high" and what is popular surcomes to one another.
My name is Amber DeRose and I'm new to the Tampa area. I just moved here with my boyfriend this month from the spacecoast. I'm undecided on what career path I want to take. I'm reaching for a general A.A while taking classes that interest me that may help me decide on what I want to do with my life. I love video games, cats, and orange juice.
ReplyDeleteAs for the quote above, I have mixed feelings about it. I believe, in a way, certain aspects of popular culture could last thousands of years. Popular culture is forever changing, but there are certain characteristics that stick around. Celebrities come and go, but there are icons from popular culture that will forever be remembered.
My name is JC Carrasquillo and I have lived in Tampa, Fl for nine years now. I am currently going for my A.A. in Business Administration with the intentions of continuing my study's in USF for my Bachelor's degree.
ReplyDeleteMy response to this quote:
I can agree to that statement to some extent because of the amazing breakthroughs in western culture that have much to do with the way we live today. However the second half of this quote makes an impression that, "That's it, no other society in present and future can achieve great things that will pass the test of time." I believe that is for the present and future societies to decide what may spark a change in our culture and make an impact that will last many generations.
Hallo! My name is Elizaveta Georgieva (Lisa). I moved to Tampa from St.Petersburg, Russia. I am a great fan of classical art. I am in the Nursing Program right now. If everything goes as planned, I will graduate as an RN next May.
ReplyDeleteConcerning the quote, I do not quite agree with it. It is not very wise to compare popular culture (modern heroes and celebrities) and Western classical art and literature. These are 2 different categories. We can certainly compare art and literature of our ancestors and the contemporary art and literature. The contemporary art is much less rigid, more creative, and sometimes even shocking. The art of earlier periods follows the rules and is easier to analyze and understand. As for the popular culture, meaning "heroes and celebrities", as the centuries pass, we forget them. Some 50 years later, I doubt that anyone will remember Shakira or Beyonce, as much as I may like them now.
My name is Alexandra Starzhevskiy, and I grew up in Russia. I have been living in Tampa for almost three years now. I recently applied to HCC Nursing Program, and, hopefully, I will start this fall. Meanwhile, I take several classes at HCC, and work as an office manager.
ReplyDeleteAs for the quote, I do not agree with the comparison that the author makes. I believe culture is a characteristic of a specific society over a certain period of time. It has various forms, and changes with society that creates it. There are, definitely, many examples of art and literature that “has passed the unforgiving test of time,” and became a precious part of our history. On the other hand, there is a popular culture, and it is different, but reflects today’s society.
My name is Amanda Miles and I was born in Pennsylvania. I have lived in Florida since I was 7. I am going to school for chid human services program. I work at an Elementary School after school program and go take 3 classes.
ReplyDeleteMy response to the quote is I agree but also disagree because although art leaves a huge impact and carries throughout the years, certain celebrities will also carry on and leave marks in our lives through their timeline of how they got to where they are and gives us a piece of history to carry on.
Hi my name is Michael Burgess, I’m 20 years old I was born and raised here in Tampa, FL and don’t really see myself living anywhere else As you all know I’m doing my studies now at HCC but plan on transferring to a four year college to finish my degree in medicine and hopefully a minor in business. I work part time at Riverview Elementary as an after school care worker and enjoy doing that.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think of the above quote is its saying that our art from the past, present and future will always be here always and forever to tell us a story. Many people don’t pay attention to the art but to the trends and what’s hot right now. Historical paintings and just great works of art in general will always be around for years to come and will never be able to fade away like some entertainers. If you think about it cartoons are a piece of art and people have been drawing them for years on end so the art will never fade out.
Hi my name is Shana Michaud, and I'm originally from New Hampshire but have lived in Florida for ten years. I'm currently working on getting an A.A.S in counseling and human services at HCC. After I plan on going to a four year college and getting my masters in psychology.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the quote, I have mixed feelings towards it. I believe we will always observe and learn from the classics because of the massive impact they took on helping set up the society we live in today. However, I believe pop culture has a great impact on its generation. While most pop culture may not be scholastic it does create the trends of that generation and can show what was currently going on at that time.
My name is April Hall, and I was born and raised in Hillsborough County. I am a 31 year old mother of two and a wife to my husband Robert for over 11 years. I am giving college a second go around, because I first attempted after high school and motherhood put it on the back burner. I am working to get my A.A. in Business Admin.
ReplyDeleteAs for the above quote, I disagree with it. I believe that we will always carry on some sort of influence from art, whether it was ancient or current art. Even though today’s pop culture changes more frequently the cultures of ancestors, some piece of that change will carry on to the next. Such icons as Michael Jackson, Madonna or even Elvis are iconic musician of art that have influenced music of today and music of our future. We will forever be inspired by historical art, only to enlighten it with a twist of today’s culture.
Hi my name is Jazmine, I moved from NY to Tampa 2 years and decided to further my education as a Registered Nurse. I am 32 years old with a 14 and 7 year old plus I work full time, so my life can be a little Hectic.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the quote, I am unable to voice an opinion at this time. my book did not make it to me today. I was hoping that it would be here. However, I hope I will receive it tomorrow in time to post my opinion.

ReplyDeleteHi. My name is Naillah, pronounced Na-ee-la. I moved to Tampa from New York over 3 years ago in order to be close to my two big boys (16 & 13)that live with their dad. I have four chidren all togeter; a 3 year old son and 9 year old daughter that live home with my husband and I. I’ve decided to return to school so that I can earn more money. I’m still deciding what to take up when I finish but do enjoy the learning processes and being exposed to all kinds of knowledge.
ReplyDeleteThe responce to the quote is very subjective. It is true that there is a pop culture that does not survive the test of time. However some of it does. The study of the humanites can't be seperate from what happens in our history. Pop culture will always be a part of our history and what dies and what last. all stems from the human experience. Only hind-site can make that judment on what was a fad, and what "stuck" to become classic.
My name is Manes Charles; I grew up in Northwest part of Haiti. I immigrated to the U.S. in 2001; I live in Tampa since then. Currently working in my AA, Liberal Arts Study opts to transfer at USF.
ReplyDeleteAs to the quote, I think some arts are forgotten, in our generation. I believe those that are forgotten are base in value and nature. And as the generation change more and more will fade.
My name is Oscar Williams I was born in Tampa, Fl and I am current seek my AA.in Business Administration.
ReplyDeleteThe way the culture is to day how can the past be forgetten. Look at all the fine art and painting from the past that today’s culture wear on their clothing or the accessory they wear. I doubt western culture would ever lose it place in to days history.
Hello All! My name is Keshana Simmons, I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. I have been living in Tampa almost 3 years. I am currently seeking my A.A. in Teacher/Educator Preperation, with the hopes of obtaining my B.A. from USF and becoming an English teacher.
ReplyDeleteMy position in regards to the quote is that just like many arts of the past are still very relevant today,I think the same will hold true years from now about my generation. In my opinion there is always something that came before that has some how inspired or led the way for the various forms or creative arts that we see today. That is the beauty of learning from the past because you are given the opportunity to expand and possibility make what was before your generation better.
Hello class
ReplyDeleteMy name is Leonard Soler. I have grown up in the Tampa bay area. This is my second year at HCC, and I will graduate with my associate’s degree in the summer. I will then transfer to USF to get a degree in education. I work part time at a day care, where I watch second and third graders and go to school fulltime.
My position on this quote is that it is more than true. Famous people such as musicians, actors, athletes, personality will come and go, but master pieces in art will always be known and studied. From childhood we learn about the Mona Lisa and other famous portraits and not about famous people. Decades from now, people will not know who Jay Leno is but the will know the famous painting of the last supper and other great works.
Hello all! My name is Christy Beavers. I was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming but only lived there for a few months. I have pretty much lived in Brandon all my life. I am 23 years old and I was going to HCC for my AA in Dental to become a dentist but have recently decided to change my mind to child psychology once I transfer to USF.
ReplyDeleteI can't say that I 100% agree or disagree to the quote above. I do believe that art has the potential to leave a longer impression because of the fact that its a work of art and many times art will live on longer in society because its something people can continue to see in museums and such. I also believe that many people in our culture can also be remember long into generations to come. Not every celebrity or person can be remembered as long as art work but like some people have said I also believe some can. People like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles and other people like our presidents have the potential to stand out just like a Mona Lisa painting.
I didnt realize the quote was on the page.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the quote. I would have to agree. In today's society what people consider art is not of what our ancestors were bought up on. Children see art today as a form of whats new as far as music, clothes and whatever else these celebrities put out. Its very rarely a child can tell you what egyptian artifacts exist in a museum. Our society needs to recognize that once these celebrities disappear we will still have the trditions from earlier civilization.
Hi, my name is Lourdes Salazar. Born and raised in Cuba, I came to US in 1996, and I'm very grateful for what this country has giving me. I'm 33 with a husband, a beautiful baby girl, and expecting my second child. I lived in Sarasota for 12 years but moved to Riverview to be closer to my family. I'm seeking a degree in business administration.
ReplyDeleteAs per the quote, I believe that it's a shame these days some people see art totally different than our ancestors. The lack of knowledge of the signicance meaning of the art back in those days makes us today somehow ignorant. I wish books like this be introduced in early childhood, it would teach us the importance of keeping real cultural traditions instead of having to deal with what the world is bringing out as art these days, which I consider some of it it's just a bunch of noise.
My name is Xavier Torres, I was born in Detroit,Michigan. Moved to Florida 9 years ago with my mother and brother. I'm Puerto Rican. My family resides in San Juan and Utuado.
ReplyDeletePopular culture to me is all about trends. We follow these trends because we see it everyday whether it is on tv or in the streets. We have celebrities out here that are truely remembered for talents and gain there popularity for certain reasons. Then we have the celebrities who start trends whether it is fashion sensed or in the way they communicate. It is hot for the moment then it just goes away and a new trend is created. Everyone gets bored of the same thing so it will always appeal to the majority.
Prince Grant
ReplyDeleteHello my name is Prince Grant I'm from St.Augustine Fla.The oldest city in the U.S. As for me I just move here to the Tampa area just under a year now before that I was at Ft. Bragg N.C. I served 22yrs in the U.S. Army so I've seen alot been to alot of countries but I must say Europe is a very heart touching country it really makes a small Picture come to big thoughts know how they live and take life real as it can be south west Asia is a different in there culture as well so I been all over the world and to Korea, Bosnia so on all are different..
Hi, my name is Sheila Espada. I was born and raised in New York. I am currently a Revenue Verification Manager for the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa. I am looking forward to finishing school next semester and continue my education at USF.
ReplyDeleteThere are certain parts of this passage that I agree with and some that I do not agree with. I agree that the achievements of our past Western Culture have been and continue to be part of generations that have followed but I do not agree with the statements suggesting that all of the achievements of the artists that follow our artistic ancestors will be forgotten.
My name is Savana Donner, I grew up here in Tampa. I'm in HCC to get my general A.A then I plan on transferring to get my Bachelor's in Nursing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the quote in the sense that today's celebrities will be forgotten. They are the gladiator's of our time. They entertain but they bring nothing new or valuable to the table.
My name is Winsome Messam, I am originally from Jamaica where I served as a Police for 12 years. I am pursuing an AAS in Medical Office Administration.
ReplyDeleteToday's popular culture is as nebulous as the morning mist, it is without substantial depth. Most of today's works of art is indeed instant. Contrary to this substantial depth of fine arts, music, poetry, books, and writings of the fathers of our western civilization, most of today's works of arts are geared towards financial gain rather than posterity. One can hardly compare the masters of old with the pretenders of today.
My name is Daniela Pesaresi. I'm 18 years old and attending HCC to receive my A.A. and plan to transfer to get my masters degree in Psychology.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with this quote because although the past has molded everything to what it is now we are also molding today. Todays works of art and music will create future works tomorrow. It's ignorant to say that todays artists work will die because they are forming the future as did our ancestors work before us.
This is a test
ReplyDeleteThe Western culture still remains because the culture shows how strong and resiliant our ancestors were just to survive. It is remarkable that our modern culture can relive some of the dangerous journeys our ancestors encountered through the development of technolology.
ReplyDeleteFay Cameron
My name is Max Watson, I'm 19 and I was born in Tampa but currently live in Gibsonton. I work in Downtown Tampa and take night classes at HCC.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote, the impact that was left so long a go has a lasting impression that has stuck around for very long. So much effort was put into things, so much time and work. It's not forgotten for a reason.
I think the journey that Gilgamesh had taken was to search for everlasting life. He wanted a life where he would not be alone to face death as he wept for his friend Enkidu. His journey led to despair as he expressed his thoughts and wondered about the reason for his existence. Even the people whom he met on his journey saw the anguish and depression on his face. He so overcome with fear and so before falling asleep he prayed to the gods for peace and protection. He never found the kind of everlasting life and thought he was no better than a dead man.
ReplyDeleteMy Name is Prince Grant I'm new here in the area moving here after being in the U.S. Army for 22yrs.So I'm going to get it my Best..
ReplyDeleteWell as for Art goes it's a big saying that can explain alot of good and bad meaning. But it can really explain true feelings of how it was back in the Day hard times which meant alot so from then to Now it has come along ways.
My name is Batista Madonia, I'm 20 years old and I was born in the Tampa Bay Area.
ReplyDeleteAs for the quote, I agree. Some very famous works of art are remembered for what society thought of them and works of art will continue to be remembered through time.
